Weekly Inspiration - Mary Kom

Educating and helping young women in India has been the forefront of the Bella Kinesis mission and Mary Kom has done just that, so she was an obvious choice for our weekly inspiration. For those of you who haven’t heard of her, Mary is an Indian boxer who won the bronze medal for Women’s Boxing in the 2012 London Olympics. Her ring nickname is ‘Magnificent Mary’. She was born in Manipur, Northern India in 1983 and her parents worked in traditional slash-and-burn fields. She had always been athletic at school but was only inspired to become a boxer in 2000 by Dingko Singh.

Now she is a five-time World Boxing champion and the only woman to have won a medal in one of the six world championships, and the only Indian woman that qualified for the 2012 London Olympics.

Aside from her personal athletic achievements, Mary has partnered up with Vodafone and is launching a new mobile app in India to help teach women self-defence. This app will include tips on protection including kicking and punching techniques as well as an SMS service and helpline for women who have been attacked. She hopes it will make women feel safer in a country that is filled with so much unreported sexual violence. She is also in the works of creating the first ‘fight club’ for women in India, following the success of her existing self-defence camp in her homes state of Manipur. A biopic on Mary Kom is also in the works and will be released later in 2014 with former Miss World Priyanka Chopra playing Kom.

Keep fighting,

Shaleena & Roshni
