Monday was Holi, which got me thinking about my last holi-type experience at last year’s Brighton Colour Run. I think a lot of people are intimidated by running. So many of my friends claim that they ‘can’t run’. Fun events remove the scariness from the process and can be a gateway to get people running on a regular basis. These events are great because they’re non-competitive and the running part isn’t even compulsory. It’s not about your time, just the fact that you partook in the run.
Here are a few of our favourite events happening in the UK:
It’s called the Happiest 5k on the Planet and it’s not hard to understand why. You start the race in white (they send you a starter pack with a colour run t-shirt, head band and temporary tattoos) and finish covered in five different coloured chalks. After each kilometre you run through a different colour wheel when volunteers throw chalk on you, leaving you rainbow-hued at the finish line. After the race there’s a colour festival with a live DJ and more opportunities to colour yourself. Check out the website for dates and upcoming events. It’s not to be missed.
Run 5k through an electric wonderland! LED lights, glowsticks and neon trees are all part of the Electric Run. There’s pumping music too and a neon rave at the end to celebrate. Your starter pack comes with a t shirt, glow jewellery, glow sunglasses and an LED bracelet. The event takes place at night but is open to all ages and proceeds from the run go to supporting Breast Cancer Care. The Electric Run takes place on 26th April in Wembley.
Race for Life events have been going on for a while but are still a great example of women coming together to raise both awareness and support for breast cancer and those affected by it. The events join people of all ages and abilities in a flurry of pink to put some fun into fundraising. Race for Life events happen throughout the year and are held across the UK. We’ll be taking part in the Regents Park 5k on 31st of May so come and say hello!
Keep running (at whatever pace),
Shaleena & Roshni
