I went to my first hot yoga class at Fierce Grace last week. I’ve wanted to try Bikram for some time now, so when I heard Fierce Grace was one of the most beautiful hot yoga studios in London, I just had to give it a try. I went with a friend who is a regular at Fierce Grace. On our way, she said, “I hope you don’t hate me afterwards” - which understandably made me pretty nervous. I’m not the most advanced of yoginis so was wondering how was I going to cope with asanas in a sauna!
We went to the 11:30 class in Primrose Hill. From the outside the studio looked very quaint. There was no locker room, just a small changing room with hangers and cubbyholes for your bags. After getting ready, I went into the beautiful studio. It was a large room with huge vents and markers on the floor to tell you where to place your mats. When the class started, the teacher briefly spoke to me. She said that as a first timer, hydration and breathing were key to a successful class and that anything I could not do, I shouldn’t.
The class was 90 minutes long, which I found quite difficult. It started off with standing and balancing positions and then moved on to floor poses. I found the latter easier, but as the class went on, regulating my breath became more challenging. We repeated the sun salutation several times but went into many different poses. The class was well varied and moved at a good pace so I was never bored.
I’m not going to lie; halfway through the class I did start to hate my friend a little and even mouthed over some profanities. But when the class ended, I felt energised and so much better about myself. I would highly recommend this class to anyone that enjoys yoga. Bikram is not for everyone but it is an excellent challenge for your body. Fierce Grace offers great packages for beginners so check out their website.
