This week I took a class with Yogasphere at the Albany Club in Camden. Yogasphere is the company that organises Yoga at the Shard, which I’ve wanted to try for the longest time but could never quite justify paying £40 for a yoga class on my current startup budget!
The Albany Club is in a converted church just a few minutes away from Regent’s Park. I got a bit lost on the way there as it’s tucked behind Albany Street – make sure you put the second postcode listed on the website into your Google Maps! The building is beautiful with vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows, which creates a completely different experience to your usual gym. The exterior of the church has been carefully maintained but the inside has had a modern makeover to make it a bright and airy workout studio. The club offers personal training, a range of workout classes and even spa treatments.
My class was in Vinyasa flow and taught by Mandy Jhamat, one of the founders of Yogasphere. At the beginning, I thought it was going to be a fairly relaxed class as we dedicated the first few minutes to meditative breathing in child’s pose. I soon realised that I had been mistaken. Once we got going, it became a pretty rigorous workout. We swiftly moved through the sun salutations and kept having to hold plank in between our dogs, which really put my core to work. Most instructors let students do their own thing if they can’t keep up with the class but Mandy pushed us throughout. This is definitely not a class for slackers! Priced at £13, I found it great value for money and will be adding it to my regular workout schedule. Shaleena and I are also already eyeing the boxing classes at the Albany Club for when we need to blow off some steam!
