On Monday, I signed up for a class with Xtend Barre. I love barre workouts and I came across Xtend on Twitter so thought I’d give them a try. Both my wallet and waistline have suffered over the past few weeks, so I was relieved to see that they offer your first class for free!

The class was in one of the studios at Danceworks, just across the road from Selfridges. There was a lot more ballet involved than other barre classes that I’ve taken. For me, this was best part about the class. I did ballet as a kid so I was fully in tune with all the jargon. I must admit though, my turnout these days is awful! We started away from the barre with some second position pliés and tendus to warm ourselves up. Everything flowed in short sets and the moves became progressively more challenging – this was usually a relevé or retiré. The arms would follow the sequence accordingly in classical ballet positions. We then added light weights to the movements. The whole class moved at a brisk pace so you definitely worked up a sweat. There was also a great playlist to keep you motivated. Something that I definitely found lacking in my Grade 6 ballet classes at school! We then moved to the barre for some leg raises and bum toning. The final part of the class was on the mats. We planked and then used bands for more leg raises and clamming for some serious glute burning.

If words like ‘arabesque’ and ‘bras bas’ are music to your ears, this is definitely the class for you. But for those who have always had an aversion to pink tights, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. There are some great offers for newcomers – your first class free as well as a 3 class pack for £40. Regular classes are £25.
