We’re very excited to introduce our ambassador Nadia Dahlawi, the amazing women behind Free Your Spine Pilates. As the year progresses we wanted to catch up with her and ask her about her goals for 2017 and how she stays motivated throughout the year.
Do you have any 2017 resolutions?
To run outside more. I feel I have been spending too much time inside lately and want to make more effort to run outside even during this cold weather!
What was the most challenging & rewarding thing about becoming an instructor?
At first I found it very challenging standing at the front of a room with 10 people watching you waiting for you to teach them for an hour!
Its very rewarding seeing people become more body aware even after one lesson and particularly with their breathing.
What were you doing pre FYS Pilates and what motivated you to become an instructor?
I was running an independent record label called ‘Young & Lost Club’ we released all four Noah & The Whales albums and debut singles from Bastille, Johnny Flynn, Bombay Bicycle Club and Everything Everything. As well as Djing and hosting our own regular live nights across London. Moving to Pilates was a big transition.
I had been taking Pilates classes for a few years and once we wound down the record label (after 10 years) I decided to do the Body Control Pilates training course. During the course I became really excited about becoming a teacher and after a year I passed my training qualifications and started teaching straight away.
Talk us through a day in the life of a Pilates instructor.
Each day can be quite different depending on my teaching schedule but typically I teach my 1:1 clients in the morning up until around lunch time. I usually have a gap after lunch where I try to go for a run, Pilates or yoga class, after that I catch up on my emails.
Most days of the week I head out around 5pm to teach one or two public classes at a local studio. I’m usually home for dinner and if there is time my fiancé and I will try to watch something on Netflix! We just finished the OA which we found crazy but very good!
Nadia is hosting a Pilates class at The Detox Kitchen on Sunday, 26th February. Get your tickets here.
